Florida in 2008: Still Hot. Still Humid. Still Disenfranchsing voters.

Florida, oh, Florida. What are we going to do with you? We're all afraid that the November 2008 election will be, in the words of baseball great Yogi Berra, "deja vu all over again." But you, my stately friend, you're trying to make sure of it, aren't you?

Seriously, what is it with you and your judges? Is it something in the water? Or do you have some sort of complex that compels you to prevent your citizens from exercising their most basic right? C'mon, you can tell us. Unhappy childhood? Demanding father? Franchisophobia (an irrational fear of elections)?

How else would you explain last week's District Court ruling that said that you are within your right "to reject voter applications if they didn't match an applicant's Florida driver's license or the last four digits of their social security number?" You do realize the effect this will have on your citizens, right? Thousands will show up at the polls on election day, expecting to be on the rolls, and will instead be turned away because of what could be a clerical or bureaucratic error? Or because they left out their middle initial on their registration form?

I see you have your Republican Secretary of State, Kurt Browning, snowed. He thinks there's good reason for this kind of law. He thinks it will "prevent fraud and errors in the system." You might want to tell him that the kind of voter fraud he thinks it might prevent is virtually non-existent. Seriously. Doesn't exist. Even the U.S. Supreme Court of the United States said so.

I'm telling you, FL, you're killing us here.

You Want Us to Vote on that Crap!?! Fuggedaboutit.

OK, let's just say, for arguments sake, that there was no malicious intent behind the myriad of electronic voting machines problems. OK, I know. Stop laughing! I am trying to prove a point here.

Grand Old Padding

According to the GOP, you can’t make this voter fraud stuff up. But that sure isn’t going to stop them from trying.

UNCOUNTED

This explosive documentary shows how election fraud changed the outcome of the 2004 election and now threatens the outcome of the 2008 election. Observe several unethical scenarios, from computer programmers flipping votes from one candidate to another, to county officials being punished for raising questions about security flaws in electronic voting machines. Uncounted is a wakeup call to all Americans to fix a broken electoral system and guarantee election integrity for all voters moving forward. We will be showing this DVD following our meeting Thursday, June 12! Don't miss it! Both these INCREDIBLE DVDs can be ordered from Ironweed Films by calling toll free at 866-456-9333 or email customerservice@ironweedfilms.com today.

In this article, Anatomy of a Price Surge Michael T. Klare explains the impact of the Iraq war on oil prices. And, in this article, Energy Speculation Causes Fuel Price Inflation, Michael W. Masters of Masters Capitol Management, LLC, explains how energy speculators are effecting the market.

The good news is that Congress can take immediate action to curb the speculators--contact your representative and ask him to protect Wakulla County families from the rising costs of fuel by closing the loopholes that greedy Wall Street traders are using at the expense of all Americans.

DELEGATE ELECTION RESULTS ARE IN!

On March 1, Alan Brock and Mary Mooney made history for Wakulla County when they were elected as Congressional District 2 Delegates to the Democratic National Convention which will be held this August in Denver, Colorado. To the best of our knowledge, there has never been a delegate to the National Convention from our County, much less two of them! The six Delegates selected for this Congressional District were: Leon County Commissioner Cliff Thaell (Clinton), former Leon County School Board Member Donna Harper Ausman (Clinton), Leon County Young Democrat Corrine Ruben (Obama), Leon County resident Donald Ham (Obama), Alan Brock (Edwards), and Mary Mooney (Edwards) - alternate was Monica O'Neal (Obama).

This record breaking feat was accomplished with the help of voters from Wakulla County who traveled to Tallahassee where the poll was held. There was a heavy turnout of 547 voters overall, with separate caucuses for each of the candidates who won over 15% of the vote during our primary on January 29. The candidate for whom Brock and Mooney ran was John Edwards, who after receiving 13 delegates in the Florida primary Statewide, dropped out of the race. Therefore, the turnout at the delegate selection process was less heavy for Edwards than for Clinton or Obama. That created the climate in which a small county like Wakulla had a chance to compete for delegates...and succeeded!

Alan and Mary both join Florida Democratic party leaders' in their optimistic view that issues between Florida and the Democratic National Committee's Rules Committee will make a conciliatory move to help put Florida in the "blue" column next November by not continuing to disenfranchise the voters who came to the polls during our primary — and will recognize the state delegation, in spite of the sanctions imposed which forced candidates to forego attending our State Convention or campaigning in our State.

In the meantime, we are so proud and happy to have this opportunity! Thank you to all of you who took the time to go to Tallahassee and cast your votes on our behalf!

VOTE BY MAIL!!!

Vote by mail (formerly known as "Absentee" Ballots) are a huge advantage in voting. Think about it...if you apply to vote by mail you get the following incentives:

No waiting in line!

No confusion about where to go to vote!

No taking off work to vote!

No delays if there are problems with voting machines!

Your ballot will be counted FIRST on election night!

No travel arrangements needed!

The PHONE CALLS STOP once the Supervisor of Elections receives your ballot!

If you go out of town, your vote still counts!

Elderly and Disabled persons can conveniently vote without leaving home!

If you choose to, you can still vote at the polls by bringing your pre-filled Ballot!

You can apply one time for an absentee ballot and receive one automatically in 2008 and 2012!

Never miss voting because of a car breakdown, an emergency, or other obligations!

In 2006, Florida Repubicans voting via absentee ballots outnumbered Democrats by over 160,000! We must overcome this massive vote deficit on Election Day. Evidence suggests that when Democrats outnumber republican vote by mailers, DEMOCRATS win! (like in the Florida House District 49 Special Election 2007 when dems outnumbered Republicans voting by mail). Republicans have been using this system to their advantage for too long. It's time we balanced that part of the playing field. Download your application and send it to your Supervisor of Elections today: Sherida Crum, P O Box 305, Crawfordville, FL 32327.
